Transport Stream

In the context of MPEG this is a standard digital container for transmission and storage of (usually) compressed audio, video and related Program and System information. A transport Stream encapsulates one or more Packetized Elementary Streams, so it is a multiplexed media transport standard.

Also known as, MPEG-TS, MTS or TS.

In broadcast systems transport streams may be found as files in storage and monitoring systems they may be transported over short distances as ASI, an SDI like proprietary interconnection standard using coax of fibre. SMPTE Standard 2022-2 defines carriage of MPEG Transport Streams over IP interconnections while SMPTE RDD 37 describes how to use MPEG Transport Streams to carry uncompressed video and audio, though use in this context is less common.
