NVOD

Near Video On Demand is the name given to a VOD service that offers individuals fairly rapid access to program material. NVOD appeared towards the end of the 20th century, pioneered by broadcasters using  sometimes oversubscribed satellite and digital terrestrial platforms. NVOD is sometimes achieved by providing the same program on a number of ‘channels’ within a multiplex with these channels offering staggered start times, and so there is not too long to wait for a chosen movie to start. NVOD made sense when programs were replayed from tape or early video servers. Now that delivery has moved on to IP based delivery in most geographies, true interactive VOD has largely eclipsed NVOD.
