Intercoms are electronic units which allow (usually) hands-free voice communication between two or more people. Intercoms have many applications in broadcast media, particularly in live production, outside broadcast and live reactive channel playout, both radio and television, as easy and immediate communication is vital to production crews. The term “talkback” is often used for this off-air communication, so the specialist Intercom systems that provide the customisable range of facilities required are often called talkback systems.
See talkback for more detail on the specialist intercom functions used by broadcast media operations.
