This per-unit royalty-free open standard was announced during April 2017 with Samsung, Panasonic and 20th Century Fox founded the HDR10+ Alliance to promote the standard in August of that year, with Amazon Video offering content in this High Dynamic Range video standard four months later. Warner Bros. announced support for HDR10+ in January 2018.

Similar to HDR10, it adds dynamic metadata, working to Samsung/ SMPTE ST 2994-40 standard, which provides further control of brightness on a scene by scene, or frame by frame basis. Dolby similarly uses dynamic metadata in its own Dolby Vision HDR system.
