Autonomous System. A collection of connected IP routing prefixes that presents a common, clearly defined routing policy to the Internet (or intranet). Each system is identified by a number issued by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) or a regional Internet registry (RIR) A routing protocol called BGP is used to route between autonomous systems. Autonomous systems tend to be big companies or organizations, and ISPs (Internet Service Providers).
