AFD is an acronym for “Active Format Description”, defined in SMPTE ST 2016-1. AFD is a code that is transported through the production chain to the end user typically describing the video’s aspect ratio, to permit the best use of display’s available area. AFD data can be carried over SDI as VANC data embedded in the VBI and also in MPEG Transport Streams. IP Formats SMPTE ST 2022-2 and -6 support carriage of AFD and other ANCillary data as does SMPTE 2110-40.
